This week we pulled bulls. Except these weren’t herd bulls, but oops bulls that were supposed to be steers. When these little calves came in, a handful of bulls was easy to miss, but as they’ve grown, they’re hard to ignore. We’ve been having problems with bullers so decided it was time to make the cut. Or in this case, the band.
Naturally, some of these cattle came from Florida and of course, those were primarily the ones that hadn’t been castrated. Florida natives are the kind that look real calm when you ride by them but put their heads up and plum run off when you try to sort them off.
The exception to the wild bull rule was this prize Shorthorn bull. We’d noticed him several times throughout the summer. His beautiful roan color is pretty hard to miss in a sea of mostly black calves. But, the three times we rode through the cattle sorting off bulls he was nowhere to be found. The deadline was Tuesday morning and Monday night he was still MIA, so at daylight we were back out searching. Jeremy finally tracked him down on the north fence line. I am not sure whether he knew what was to come or if he was just checking out the neighbor’s equally colorful Longhorn cows. Either way, he’s strutting a little slower now.
