Working Ranch Blog

My husband, Jeremy, and I work together on the ranch everyday. There is nary a better communication workshop for a married couple than doctoring sick cattle. We’ve had quite a few that have needed doctoring lately and, of course, the herd is all the way on the backside of the ranch.
So, instead of building towers out of furniture or some other ridiculous exercise in communication, our task is to rope, doctor and load the steer into the trailer so we can haul it to a different pasture closer to the house for observation.
The roping part usually goes pretty smoothly (that’s usually Jeremy’s job) then we must work together to get the steer on the ground and get all the shots in the right places. The next step is to get the steer in the trailer, and depending on how feisty the steer is that part can get pretty ugly and communication usually deteriorates quickly. Lucky for us, the steer doesn’t charge $200 an hour to teach us yelling at each other doesn’t help.
