Working Ranch Blog

You’ve heard the saying, “Behind every successful rancher is a wife who works in town.”
There are a couple things I take offense to in that sentence. But first, the reason I got to thinking about this topic is because of the cover of the latest Working Ranch, which has a woman in the photo. As soon as I saw it I got excited. As far as I know this is the first cover featuring a woman by herself. It sure looks like Mitzi Goodman is more than pulling her weight on the Haythorn.
Now, I’m not looking down on ranch wives who work off the ranch, there are many reasons for that. I just get offended when people assume that women can’t be ranchers. Granted, I don’t yet have children to wrangle and I am relatively young and able bodied, but as near as I can tell, I do my fair share of work around the ranch. And I think most women, even those who do work in town, feel the same way.
I may struggle a little when it comes to fixing the broken thing-a-ma-jigger on the tractor, but you can bet I'll be right there to help any way I can. That usually involves tracking down the tool he’s certain he didn’t misplace.
So kudos to Tim and his staff at WR for recognizing that there are plenty of good hands that happen to be female, just like there are plenty of gunsels that are male.
