Yesterday morning we woke to heavy fog and decided to postpone moving cattle ‘til we could actually see the cattle.
The fog had burned off by midday and after lunch we caught up the horses. We have a rotational grazing system, but limited water sources mean our pastures are pretty big and we move the calves about once a week. We aren’t fully stocked yet, still expecting some more cattle next week, but it takes a while for the two of us to move 800-plus steers out of a 1,000-plus-acre pasture. Plus, the first time in each pasture we drive the calves to water so that adds some time on it.
As we were gathering, we found two steers that needed some TLC. One appeared to be sick, and the other was lame. We sorted them off and left them behind. By early evening we had the cattle moved and to water and came back for the sorts, but the sky was looking ominous. We put the two in the small pasture by the house and Jeremy roped the sick one. I jumped off my horse to doctor him just as the first raindrop hit me on the head. The hail started soon after we got in the house. Perfect timing.
